IWB or OWB Holsters? Which are better for concealed carry?
In the gun community, many terms are abbreviated, which can be confusing for a newbie. If you're looking for your first holster, here are the abbreviations to look out for.
IWB and OWB are the most popular types of holsters, so let me explain the difference.
The abbreviation IWB refers to an Inside The Waistband holster. This type of holster is worn between your body and your pants (or skirt or shorts). IWB holsters clip either onto a belt or onto the fabric of your garment.
IWB holsters are, by far, the best option for concealed carry.
The appendix position is the most popular for IWB holsters. But they can work for any concealed carry position around the waist like strong-side, kidney, etc. I like to wear it either true appendix or on my non-strong side (sometimes called cross-draw).
The abbreviation OWB refers to an Outside The Waistband holster. This type of holster clips to your belt and is worn outside of your clothing.
Law enforcement officers, for example, carry their weapons outside the waistband. You'll also see this type of holster at shooting ranges and competitions.
OWB holsters are a popular option for open carry. They're not used for concealed carry as much, but you can make it work if you wear an outer layer like a jacket.
The hip and kidney carrying positions are the most popular for OWB holsters.
If concealed carry is your goal, look for a holster that is worn inside the waistband. Often the holster maker will indicate this in either the name of the holster or the description on the sales page.
My favorite holster that I wear daily is an IWB holster called the Micro Rig. Blacksmith Tactical makes it, and it's high quality and safe.
I also like their Beltless IWB with the UltiClip because it works with a lot of different outfits.
