Stay Safe During Your Uber Ride With These Tips
I try and avoid taking Uber when I’m by myself, but sometimes it’s necessary. A quick search will bring up way too many articles about rideshare-gone-wrong incidents. And it’s definitely an instance where we need to be careful and extremely situationally aware.
If you use rideshares alone or know someone who does, here are some safety tips.
Check the driver’s rating before accepting the ride. If someone has a bad rating, there’s usually a reason why. Even if it isn’t sinister.
Verify the vehicle + the driver’s name. When the car rolls up, check out the make, model, color, and license plate number first and match it to the app. If that’s off, walk away quickly. Also, don’t ask the driver, “are you Jim Smith?” Instead, ask them to tell you their name. And do this before getting inside the vehicle.
Share your trip details with someone. All rideshare apps have a feature to share your location with someone. Designate a few trusted people in your life for this, and do it every single time. While you’re riding, don’t zone out on your phone. Keep the app up to follow the map and be aware of your surroundings.
Sit in the back seat. This is unavoidable when you’re with a group, but there’s strength in numbers, so it’s usually ok. If you’re alone, always sit in the back. I sit on the passenger side, in the back, so I have some distance but can keep eyes on the driver.
Don’t give out your personal info. If you’re going to have a conversation with the driver, don’t share details of your trip or anything else. Make something up if you want, but don’t tell them any real info about your trip.
Carry a self-defense tool. You already do this, though, right? Every time you leave the house? 😬
Most of all, trust your instincts and act on them.
If something feels off, it probably is. And worst-case scenario, you’re wrong.
If you’re uncomfortable at any point, ask the driver to pull over so you can get out. If you feel unsafe, call 911.
